SPD and Holiday and Birthday Parties |
A child with a sensory processing disorder experiences holidays and birthday parties much differently than other children. The overstimulation can cause a child to have a "fight, flight or freeze" stress response and the child becomes extremely upset instead of having fun. He may cry, cover his ears, have aggressive behavior or hide under furniture. The loud sounds of children talking all at the same time, the overstimulating visual input with balloons and decorations, the unpredictability of 'what's next' all can contribute to your child's trauma. These themed holiday party lesson plans help children with sensory processing disorder enjoy these experiences, because the sensory activities organize the nervous system to help a child feel "just right", provide structure and predictable routine, and keep sensory stimulation at a level these children can tolerate while engaging and participating with their friends. For more themed lesson plans, refer to my book: Learn to Move, Move to Learn. |
